Review fron Double J feature Album of the week December 10 2018

A solid return from an old Brisbane favourite.

Okay, let’s get this out of the way, Resin Dogs get the award for best album title of the year.

But a listen to Notorious D.O.G. suggests they might have one of the better comeback records of 2018 as well. Ten years on from their last album, a shrunken version of the band have re-emerged and shown us they have a few new tricks and have kept the old ones well honed.

There are parts of this new Resin Dogs album that suggest the band are progressing, embracing modern sounds after a relatively extended period of inactivity.

The bassy, emotional club-R&B of ‘Lingering’, featuring a killer vocal from Thavy, is perfectly of the moment. Album highlight ‘So Long’ melds together some of the cinematic cut-and-paste electro of the early 2000s but instils a freshness that brings it to the modern day.

But there’s plenty of looking back too. A song like the Latin-flavoured ‘Como No’, featuring a powerful turn from London rapper Essa takes us back to the early 2000s. The Dialectrix-fronted ‘Head For The Hills N Chill’ has a little of that 90s G-Funk steez. While the brassy soul of ‘Ride’, featuring fellow Brisbane talents Tom Thum and Kel On Earth, calls to mind Winehouse-era modern soul and early 2000s Aussie hip hop.

And closing track, ‘Shaft’s Kung Fu Car Chase’? Well, we think you can probably figure that one out on your own.

It’s not just acceptable that Resin Dogs are looking back a little on this record, it’s important. Because this is something Resin Dogs have always done, whether it’s been fashionable or not.

Through their entire career DJ Katch and Dave Atkins – and their various collaborators – have made records and put on live shows that serve in the best interests of the party. They’ve never been too wrapped up in living up to genre descriptors, in breaking ground, or in doing anything besides making people smile and making people dance.
What’s perhaps most heartening about Notorious D.O.G is that it sees Resin Dogs very much taking a backseat and letting their guests take the spotlight. It’s kinda bold, but it shows the faith that these artists have in their collaborators.

To be fair, it’s always been this way; the likes of D.N.O. and Lazy Grey were always given plenty of space out the front and it’s heartening that among some of the revered heads – Hau, Abstract Rude, Dialectrix – there are fresh voices being lifted here.

Summer is here and party season is in full swing; you could do far worse than slip Notorious D.O.G onto the sound system when the vibe is heating up.
